The Joker, as depicted in "The Killing Joke" is one of Batman's most infamous adversaries. His first appearance was in Batman #1 (Spring 1940).
Prior to his transformation, he was, according to his unreliable narration, a struggling stand-up comedian with a pregnant wife. Driven to desperation, he became involved in a criminal scheme to support his family.
This plan went horribly wrong, leading to a confrontation with Batman at Ace Chemical Processing Plant. During the encounter, he fell into a vat of chemical waste. This transformed him into the psychotic clown we know.
The chemicals bleached his skin white, stained his lips red, and turned his hair green, cementing his descent into madness. The "Killing Joke" Joker is characterized by his belief that anyone can be driven insane with "one bad day," a philosophy he seeks to prove through his torture of Commissioner Gordon.
